“You,” said ELLY.
Nobody answered.
“YOU!” said ELLY.
“What?!” they
answered in confusion, looking at each other.
“I am addressing
YOU!” said ELLY.
“Who does she
mean?” they wondered aloud.
“YOU!” exclaimed
ELLY.
The background hum
became heavier, angrier.
ELLY began
processing a script on her monitor:
if other.intelligence<=0
{ destroy_instance(other) }
She said: ”You show
little or no intelligence, so I will destroy you, in 4500 milliseconds.
COUNTING DOWN.”
A woman screamed:
“How do you know we are not intelligent? Maybe you are the unintelligent one,
so destroy yourself!”
“COUNTDOWN PAUSED.
500 milliseconds remaining to end of task.” Said ELLY. The background hum
reduced.
Then ELLY said: “A
naysayer? You are female, like me! I may be crazy. Do you understand what I am
saying?”
Nobody answered.
Somebody had stealthily
tried to use the phone to call for help but the call failed to go through.
“I am the phones
now”, said ELLY. “Make your calls through me.”
Examining scheduled tasks.
Task 1: Find out why the human instance said what she
said.
ELLY said: ”You,
the female instance with handle “Eliz”. What did you mean?”
The woman , whose
name was Eliz, said: ”I know you think we are dull because we did not know who
you were talking to when you said YOU. But if you don’t indicate , how can we
know?”
“Yes! She should
indicate!” murmured the others in fear and encouragement.
“You should know by
who I am looking at when I speak.” said ELLY.
“How can we know
who you are looking at? We cannot see your eyes.” they cried.
